Americans can enroll in Medicare at age 65
In 2025, Americans can enroll in Medicare when they turn 65. Most will be automatically enrolled in hospital and medical insurance if they are already receiving benefits. Those still working may delay Part B enrollment without penalties. There are three main enrollment periods: the Initial Enrollment Period around your 65th birthday, a Special Enrollment Period for those with employer coverage, and the General Enrollment Period from January 1 to March 31. Missing deadlines can lead to lifetime penalties. Younger individuals may qualify for Medicare if they have certain disabilities or conditions, such as receiving Social Security for 24 months or having End-Stage Renal Disease. Medicare Part A is premium-free for most, while Part B has a standard premium of $185 per month.
