Amnesty calls on FIFA to halt Saudi Arabia's 2034 World Cup bid over human rights concerns
Amnesty International has called on FIFA to stop Saudi Arabia's bid for the 2034 World Cup unless significant human rights reforms are announced before the vote next month. The organization highlighted serious concerns about human rights violations in the country. FIFA is set to evaluate bids for the 2030 and 2034 World Cups at its Congress on December 11. Saudi Arabia is the only bidder for 2034, while Morocco, Spain, and Portugal are bidding for 2030. Amnesty's report states that Saudi Arabia's human rights strategies are inadequate. Concerns include discrimination against LGBTQ individuals and the treatment of migrant workers. Amnesty noted that Saudi Arabia has not addressed issues like worker safety and freedom of speech, raising doubts about the country's commitment to reform.
