Anaemia severely impacts children's health in India
Anaemia is a common health issue that affects many people, especially children. In India, over 60% of children under five years old are affected by this condition. It can cause not just fatigue but also mental and physical health problems, weakened immunity, and a higher risk of infections. Recognizing the signs of anaemia is crucial. Symptoms include muscle weakness, hair loss, brittle nails, pale skin, and changes in taste. Women may experience irregular menstrual cycles due to blood loss. Experts stress the importance of early detection and treatment. Dr. Liza Bulsara explains that anaemia occurs when there are low levels of haemoglobin in the blood. This means that organs receive less oxygen. Common causes include lack of nutrients like iron, folate, and vitamin B12, as well as blood loss from other health issues. She advises consulting a haematologist for diagnosis and treatment if symptoms are present. Dr. Sunita Kapoor highlights that untreated anaemia can lead to severe fatigue and even death from rapid blood loss. Early detection through blood tests like Complete Blood Count (CBC) and iron profiles is vital for effective treatment and preventing complications. To manage anaemia, Dr. Debjani Banerjee suggests a diet rich in iron. Good sources include meats, eggs, leafy greens, iron-fortified cereals, beans, seafood, nuts, and lentils. Supplements may also help, and it’s important to discuss these options with a doctor to determine the best approach.
