Anamika Hooda wins opener at Women’s Boxing Nationals
The 8th Elite Women’s National Boxing Championships started on Friday with more action happening outside the ring than inside. Many big names were absent, while several others moved directly to the knockout rounds. In attendance were notable figures including Ajay Singh, president of the Boxing Federation of India, and P.T. Usha, president of the Indian Olympic Association. Singh expressed his support for those unable to compete, such as Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain, and reassured participants that they would be taken care of in future events. Anamika Hooda, the reigning champion, made a strong start to her title defence by winning her first match against Prava Gajneer with a second-round knockout in the 50kg category. Other notable boxers like Sakshi and Jaismine Lamboria received walkovers in their events. The presence of former champions highlighted the talent within the sport. Singh emphasized the importance of supporting young athletes and ensuring they have opportunities to achieve their dreams in competitions like the Olympics and World Championships.
