Ancco's solo exhibition "Turnover" opens in New York
WHAAM! gallery in New York has launched "Turnover," the first solo exhibition in the U.S. by Japanese artist ancco. This display features a new collection of ceramic sculptures set in an immersive environment. The works focus on themes of time, transformation, and resilience. Ancco's art is deeply influenced by her personal experiences, especially her struggle with atopic eczema. She reflects on the fast pace of decay in both the human body and society. Her pieces connect her own skin changes with the constant shifts in modern life, turning her struggles into artistic creations. The exhibition draws inspiration from old toys and stuffed animals ancco found online. These items, though worn, show signs of being loved and have stories to tell. Similarly, her ceramic works embrace imperfections like cracks and varied colors, highlighting the beauty of decay. Moths are a recurring symbol in "Turnover," representing both personal challenges and aesthetic appeal. They are tied to her skin condition, linking her inner experiences to the outside world. Ancco’s interest in dollhouses also plays a role, allowing her to create small worlds where she can temporarily escape the fast pace of life. The exhibition is open until April 5 at WHAAM! located at 15 Elizabeth Street, #113, New York.
