Andover community raises funds for 82-year-old's new home
The community of Andover, New York, is coming together to help 82-year-old Paul Glover secure safe housing. Glover, who lived in his home for nearly 50 years, had to demolish it due to severe disrepair. He could not afford the necessary repairs, which left the house in a dangerous condition. His neighbor, Melissa Fuller, became alarmed for Glover's safety. She provided him with food, water, and grocery trips, and started a GoFundMe page to raise money for a new tiny home. The campaign has raised nearly $17,000 so far, with a goal of $25,000. Fuller is asking for more support, stating that the system has failed Glover. A local church has stepped in by donating a camping trailer, which is currently giving Glover temporary shelter. Fuller reached out to local leaders for assistance but found that existing resources did not apply to Glover's situation. Seniors often face housing challenges due to rising costs. Before the pandemic, nearly 10 million older adults struggled with affording housing. This issue has likely worsened with inflation, according to studies. Experts recommend planning ahead for future expenses, including housing and healthcare. They also suggest utilizing government programs for financial aid. Seniors should regularly update their financial plans, check for housing options, and consider modifications to their homes for safety and accessibility.
