Construction for a new splash pad in southeast Ann Arbor is set to begin this spring. The City Council approved a $1.3 million contract with Michigan Recreational Construction Inc. on March 17. The splash pad will be part of upgrades to Bicentennial Park, which is being renovated for the city's 200th anniversary in 2024. The park was renamed from Southeast Area Park. The splash pad and playground improvements are part of several projects funded through donations and grants. Currently, the city has received a $1 million grant from the state, along with nearly $847,000 from various sources. This includes a sizeable donation of $300,000 from the University of Michigan. However, they still need more than $425,000 to complete the entire project. Due to funding limitations, the construction will occur in two phases. Phase 1A will focus on installing the splash pad, updating swings and other playground equipment, renovating restrooms, and enlarging a drainage area. This work can start immediately. Phase 1B will follow once additional funding is secured. This phase will involve building new sidewalks and fences, as well as restoring the park. City parks staff will manage vegetation clearing and other improvements. The splash pad will utilize a water recirculation system to minimize waste. This system will use 10,000 to 20,000 gallons of water per season, compared to an estimated 10 to 15 million gallons for traditional systems. Solar panels will also be installed to power various facilities in the park.
