Ann Arbor's pedestrian tunnel construction starts, set for fall
Construction of a new pedestrian tunnel in Ann Arbor is set to begin on March 24. The tunnel will connect two popular areas along the Huron River, Bandemer Park and Barton Nature Area, creating a safer route for pedestrians and bicyclists. City officials say that there is currently no safe way to travel between these areas. The tunnel aims to provide this important connection. Hillary Hanzel, the parks capital project manager, emphasized the need for a safe passage for all users. During the construction, there will be barriers and signage to inform the public of access changes. A bridge leading from Huron River Drive into Barton Nature Area will be closed. However, access to Barton will remain available from the northwest near Barton Dam. Drivers should also be alert to potential delays. Construction traffic will use Huron River Drive and Bandemer Park, which may create temporary noise and disruption in the area. A 48-hour closure of the railroad tracks is planned for June 3-4, which will also affect the vehicle bridge into Bandemer Park. The new tunnel will connect to a segment of the Border-to-Border Trail that was completed in 2024. The project will also improve parking along Huron River Drive and include public art inside the tunnel.
