Anthropologists propose new spectrum approach for tribal classification
Top anthropologists in India are advocating for a new way to define tribes, suggesting a spectrum of "tribalness" instead of a strict binary classification. This shift was discussed at the recent Indian Anthropology Congress, where experts emphasized the need for a more nuanced approach. Currently, the Indian government uses outdated criteria from 1965 to classify Scheduled Tribes. Critics argue these criteria are no longer relevant. The proposed new method would involve a matrix of up to 150 indicators to assess a community's tribal characteristics. This change aims to better reflect the diversity of tribal communities and their social institutions. The initiative seeks to align with constitutional mandates and improve policymaking, addressing ongoing demands from various communities for inclusion in the Scheduled Tribe list.
