Apollo Hospitals launches Seniors First program in Bengaluru
Apollo Hospitals has introduced a new healthcare program called "Seniors First" in Bengaluru, aimed at supporting elderly citizens. This program is designed to meet the specific health needs of seniors during challenging times in their lives. The initiative will use a method called the "clinical frailty scale" to assess and provide appropriate care. Each senior will have a dedicated manager to help them navigate healthcare services. The program includes a helpline for health queries, priority consultations, homecare services, and emergency support. Karnataka's Health Minister, Dinesh Gundu Rao, emphasized the importance of planning for an aging population, noting that the number of seniors will double by 2050. He and others at the launch highlighted the urgent need for focused healthcare for older citizens. Dr. Preetha Reddy from Apollo Hospitals pointed out that many seniors struggle to access healthcare. The Seniors First program aims to simplify this process, ensuring seniors receive the necessary care and guidance. Dr. Steve Paul, responsible for the program’s implementation, noted a challenge in finding trained medical professionals to address the unique needs of seniors. He is working on expanding his small team of caregivers to ensure coverage. As India’s population ages, there is a growing demand for trained specialists in geriatrics. Although steps are being made to educate more healthcare workers, experts believe the need will continue to rise. Seniors First targets individuals aged 65 and older, who represent a significant portion of Apollo's patient base. The program was developed during a brainstorming session, aiming to address the needs of working professionals who seek assistance for their aging parents. Unique to this program is its proactive approach. Rather than waiting for seniors to seek help, the team will regularly check in on them, providing a higher level of support. While specific costs for the program have not been disclosed, Apollo Hospitals hopes it will be affordable for middle-class families. Following its launch in Bengaluru, Apollo plans to expand the Seniors First initiative across India.
