Apple may introduce a portless iPhone model soon
Apple may be planning to release a new iPhone without any charging port, according to a recent report. This would mean the company could eliminate the USB-C charging port that is currently standard on its devices. Instead of a port, the new iPhone could feature a smooth metal surface where the charging port usually is. This change would require users to rely completely on wireless charging pads to power their phones. Mark Gurman, a well-known Apple insider, mentioned that while the decision for the upcoming iPhone 17 wouldn’t include this portless design, Apple might consider it in the future. He noted that many people are already accustomed to using wireless chargers. This idea comes after the European Union passed a law in 2022 that mandated all smartphones in the EU to use USB-C charging ports. Apple switched to USB-C for its iPhones starting in 2023 to comply with this law. However, a spokesperson from the European Commission confirmed that a portless design would also meet legal requirements. While the iPhone 17 lineup, expected to launch in September, will still have USB-C ports, the potential for a portless version could arrive later. Other details suggest that the iPhone 17 Air might be a lighter, thinner option within the new series. Currently, the law only affects EU countries. However, Apple opted for a universal switch to USB-C for simplicity. They have not officially confirmed any plans about a portless iPhone.
