April 2025 Social Security payments will vary by birth date
The Social Security Administration (SSA) will pay benefits to millions of Americans in April 2025. Social Security payments include retirement, survivor, and disability benefits. Around 70 million people receive these payments every month. Payments are made throughout the month, depending on the recipient's birth date. For most people, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is usually paid at the beginning of each month. In April 2025, payment dates will be spread across various days. For retirees at Full Retirement Age, the maximum monthly benefit is $4,018. If you start receiving benefits at age 62, the maximum drops to $2,831. Waiting until age 70 can increase your benefit to $5,108. The average retirement benefit as of January 2025 is $1,976. For SSI, the maximum monthly payment is $967 for individuals and $1,450 for couples, but amounts may vary based on personal circumstances. The SSA is making several changes that claimants should note. Starting March 31, 2025, claimants will no longer be able to verify their identity over the phone. This change is intended to prevent fraud. Also, on March 27, the SSA will begin withholding 100 percent of benefits to recover any overpayments. Previously, only 10 percent could be withheld. Additionally, the monthly benefits for some individuals affected by past policies will increase starting in April 2025.
