April 2025 SSI payments increase by 2.5%
Millions of Americans will see an increase in their Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments starting in April 2025. This boost results from a 2.5% Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA), which helps recipients cope with inflation and rising living costs. The next SSI payment is set to be issued on April 1, 2025. Since this date falls on a weekday, recipients can expect their payments on time, unlike in some previous months where payments were delayed due to weekends or holidays. The COLA increase will adjust the maximum federal SSI payments, though individual amounts may differ. These variations depend on each recipient's income, financial resources, and any additional state-level supplements. Each year, the SSI payment amounts are calculated based on inflation to help maintain recipients' standards of living. For 2025, the COLA calculation led to a 2.5% rise in benefits. The new amounts are determined by applying the COLA to the previous year's totals and rounding down to the nearest dollar. Most SSI payments are made on the first of each month. Since April 1 will be a weekday, recipients can expect their payments to be processed as scheduled. If recipients also get Social Security retirement benefits or SSDI, those payments will arrive on April 3, creating two payments within a few days for some. To qualify for SSI, individuals must meet certain criteria. Some states may offer additional supplements that could raise monthly benefits. However, having other income sources, like part-time work or Social Security, might reduce SSI payments. While many people will receive their April payments as expected, some may experience delays due to common issues that affect SSI processing.
