April Phillips resigns as SJSU women's basketball coach
San Jose State University has announced that April Phillips will not return as the head coach of the women's basketball team. She led the Spartans for three seasons, finishing with a record of 23 wins and 71 losses. This past season, the team had a disappointing record of 10 wins and 22 losses. The Spartans struggled in the Mountain West Conference, winning only three out of 18 games. They placed 10th in the 11-team league and were eliminated in the first round of the conference tournament by Fresno State earlier this month. Over her time at SJSU, the team recorded a conference record of 8 wins and 46 losses. The university plans to start an immediate search for Phillips' replacement. San Jose State has never made it to the NCAA Tournament. The timing of this change coincides with the opening of the transfer portal, which allows players to switch schools, and new NCAA rules that may soon allow direct payments to student-athletes. The Spartans will need to find new players, as their top scorer, Amiah Simmons, and leading rebounder, Djessira Diawara, have both graduated. Phillips, who previously played at Georgia Tech and Xavier, joined SJSU before the 2022-23 season after working as an assistant coach at Texas, Cal, and Arizona. She succeeded Jamie Craighead Turner, who had coached the team for nine years.
