'Arul' EP nominated for 2025 JUNO Awards in Canada

Canadian songwriter Yanchan Produced and Chennai-based vocalist Sandeep Narayan have collaborated on an EP called ‘Arul’. This project has earned a nomination for the 2025 JUNO Awards in Canada. Sandeep Narayan, known for performing traditional Carnatic music, faced a challenge with one of the tracks, ‘Tradition’. He had to sing classical lyrics over modern hip-house beats. He overcame doubts about mixing genres to bring this unique sound to life. The EP blends traditional Carnatic music with contemporary styles, and it has sparked discussions among music purists. ‘Arul’ has been well-received by global listeners for its innovative approach. It is nominated for the South Asian Music Recording of the Year Award at the upcoming JUNO Awards in Toronto. Sandeep expressed gratitude for being nominated alongside famous artists, saying that the project connects Indian tradition with modern influences. The collaboration between Sandeep and Yanchan began when they reconnected during the COVID-19 lockdown. They experimented with hip-hop beats from Yanchan's studio in Canada, creating a mix of five short tracks. Initially, they were not aiming to produce an EP, but the project developed organically. Despite facing difficulties with major music labels, Sandeep and Yanchan decided to launch ‘Arul’ independently. The response has been positive, especially from the younger South Asian diaspora. Many listeners felt a connection to their cultural roots through the music. Sandeep is looking ahead to more projects, including an extension of the ‘Arul’ concept and a new album with German musicians. This upcoming work will feature a mix of original compositions and covers, showcasing the diversity of Indian classical music.
