Arunachal Pradesh launches Siang Upper Multipurpose Project to address flood risks from China
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project, costing Rs 1.13 lakh crore, aims to maintain river flow and reduce flood risks from China's dams. This project is seen as crucial for national security. Khandu highlighted that the project will create a reservoir to store 9 billion cubic meters of water, ensuring consistent river flow and acting as a buffer against sudden water releases from China. Local opposition concerns include displacement and environmental impact. The government plans to conduct surveys and hold public hearings to address local concerns. Khandu emphasized the importance of dialogue and transparency in the project's development, which is part of broader hydropower initiatives in the region.
