Ashoka University launches advanced computing school for innovation
Ashoka University has opened a new facility called the Ashoka School of Advanced Computing (ASAC) on March 21, 2025. This initiative aims to change how computer science is taught and researched by merging it with other fields like natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. The goal of ASAC is to lead innovative research in areas such as computer science, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML). The school plans to use computational methods to tackle pressing issues in society, including healthcare, climate change, sustainability, and public policy. To support this ambitious project, Ashoka University aims to raise ₹250 crore over the next five years. This funding will be used for research, faculty recruitment, and attracting students from around the world. Prof. Somak Raychaudhury, the Vice Chancellor of Ashoka University, emphasized the importance of developing "computational thinkers" who can address complex global challenges with both technical skills and ethical awareness. ASAC will offer various academic programs that blend traditional computer science with subjects like mathematics, economics, philosophy, and entrepreneurship. Future programs are set to include cognitive science, biology, and data science. The school will also create several Centers of Excellence focused on advanced research. These include the Centre for Data Science and Analytics, the SafeExpress Centre for Data, Learning and Decision Sciences, the Centre for Digitalisation, AI, and Society, and the Koita Centre for Digital Health. These centers will concentrate on new research areas like data analytics, AI in healthcare, digital ethics, and solutions to societal challenges.
