ASI acquitted in Mohali bribery case due to evidence issues
A court in Mohali has acquitted assistant sub-inspector Boota Singh in a bribery case. The decision came after the prosecution could not provide enough evidence to support the claims against him. Boota Singh was arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000. He was accused of demanding the payment in exchange for releasing a seized car and providing a favorable report. The case began when a complainant, Mehrban Singh, reported the incident to the vigilance department. Mehrban Singh and his friend were arrested by the Sohana police in June 2017 under the NDPS Act. After being released on bail a month later, Singh tried to get his car back. He claimed that Boota Singh initially asked for Rs 18,000 but later agreed to take Rs 10,000. The vigilance team set a trap and caught Boota Singh accepting the bribe. However, the case weakened when the complainant left the country and did not appear in court. Additionally, a key witness changed his statement. Due to these developments, the judge concluded that there was not enough evidence against Boota Singh and acquitted him.
