Asia's first AI-designed intraocular lens implantation performed

A private hospital in Bengaluru has successfully performed Asia's first intraocular lens implantation designed using artificial intelligence (AI). Nethradhama Super Speciality Eye Hospital announced the milestone, led by Dr. Sri Ganesh, the hospital's chairman and managing director. The new intraocular lenses (IOLs), named Rayner RayOne Galaxy and Galaxy Toric, are designed for patients suffering from cataracts and astigmatism. Dr. Ganesh highlighted that these lenses improve vision quality while also enhancing night vision, a common challenge in previous designs. This innovative approach allows for better light distribution, which results in clearer vision at all distances and reduces issues like halos and glare. The AI-optimized design aims to provide greater customization and precision for each patient. Dr. Ganesh emphasized the significance of this technology in refractive cataract surgery, stating it improves patient satisfaction. The lenses may help patients rely less on glasses or even eliminate the need for them completely. Long-term studies will be conducted to monitor patient experiences, especially in low-light situations and during night driving. The hospital is optimistic about the potential impact of this advanced lens technology on eye care.
