Assam BJP demands apology from MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi
The BJP in Assam has asked MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi to apologize publicly for his aggressive behavior during a recent session in the state assembly. Kurmi confronted Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi in an altercation that drew criticism from party leaders. On March 21, Kurmi, who represents the Mariani constituency, confronted Gogoi after he interrupted him while speaking. Kurmi left his seat and approached Gogoi, leading to a heated exchange. Other legislators attempted to intervene, but the situation escalated. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma discussed the incident with Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia. They agreed that Kurmi's actions did not reflect the party's standards of discipline and respect. In a letter to Kurmi, Saikia expressed disappointment and emphasized the importance of maintaining decorum in the assembly. He noted that Kurmi's behavior was contrary to the traditions of the assembly and the BJP's core values of restraint and principled debate. Rupjyoti Kurmi joined the BJP in 2021 after leaving Congress. The party now expects him to apologize to restore the integrity of their image in the eyes of the public.
