Assam cancels Bihar Diwas celebration due to opposition
The Assam government has canceled the Bihar Diwas celebration in Tinsukia. This decision came after opposition from various organizations, including a militant group called ULFA-Independent. Despite the cancellation, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma sent his greetings to the people of Bihar. He praised their contributions to India’s history and emphasized the importance of their cultural legacy. Sarma called on Biharis to continue their hard work for a brighter future. The event was part of celebrations meant to strengthen national unity. Assam’s BJP President, Dilip Saikia, explained that such events celebrate the foundation days of various states to promote goodwill and diversity. However, due to local opposition, the celebration in Tinsukia was canceled. Saikia also pointed out that celebrating foundation days, like Bihar Diwas, should be seen as a cultural event rather than a political one. He urged everyone to respect these occasions. ULFA-Independent expressed strong opposition, calling the event an attack on indigenous culture. They threatened serious consequences if the celebration proceeded. Opposition party Raijor Dal also opposed the celebration. Their leader, Akhil Gogoi, criticized the BJP for trying to engage in vote-bank politics, stating that there has been no reciprocal celebration of Assam events in Bihar.
