Assam introduces Bill to regulate private coaching centres
The Assam government has introduced a new Bill to regulate private coaching centres. This legislation aims to ensure all coaching institutes are officially registered and follow specific guidelines. Education Minister Ranoj Pegu presented the Assam Coaching Institutes (Control and Regulation) Bill, 2025. The Bill focuses on improving academic support for students preparing for competitive exams. Under the proposed law, all coaching centres must register, including those that have been operating before the Bill becomes law. The Bill also prohibits these institutes from engaging in activities related to religious conversion, upholding India's secular principles. Institutes wishing to register must provide details about their curriculum, class duration, co-curricular activities, teacher qualifications, tuition fees, and facilities. Registration certificates will be valid for two years, after which institutes must reapply for renewal. The registration process will be handled by a competent authority, which must approve or deny applications within three months. The government plans to create an online system for a smooth registration process. If an institute violates the law, the government can cancel or suspend its registration.
