Assam regulates private coaching centres with new bill
The Assam assembly has passed a new bill to regulate private coaching centres. This law requires all coaching institutes to register and follow strict guidelines. During the assembly session, there was a disruption when MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed was suspended for interrupting the Education Minister, Ranoj Pegu. Mr. Pegu explained that the bill aims to address the commercialization of coaching centres and protect students and their families from being misled. The law, named the Assam Coaching Institutes (Control and Regulation) Bill, 2025, requires coaching centres to help students prepare for higher education. It focuses on students aged 16 and above. The bill includes a 30-day period for existing centres to apply for registration once the law is enacted. Coaching centres must provide detailed information about their curriculum, class duration, teacher qualifications, fees, and facilities. The registration certificate will be valid for two years before needing renewal. The government plans to create an online system for easy registration. If coaching centres violate the law, their registration can be suspended or canceled.
