Assam State Zoo receives 15 new species from Chandigarh
The Assam State Zoo and Botanical Garden has welcomed 15 new animal species from an exchange program with Chhatbir Zoo in Chandigarh. The new arrivals reached the zoo on Friday night and include three new bird species. These birds are the Java Sparrow, Chukar Partridge, and Comb Duck. In addition to the birds, the zoo has also received a Golden Pheasant, an Emu, a Kalij Pheasant, and a blackbuck. Ashwini Kumar, the zoo's Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), stated that these animals will be kept in quarantine for monitoring and care until they adjust to their new home. As part of the exchange, the Assam State Zoo will send a female hippopotamus, a pair of leopards, and two pairs of mouse deer to Chhatbir Zoo. Currently, the Assam State Zoo houses over 120 species and more than 1,200 animals, including well-known species like rhinoceros, tiger, giraffe, lion, kangaroo, orangutan, and hoolock gibbon.
