Assassin's Creed Shadows struggles for optimization with RTX 5090

A new PC with the Nvidia RTX 5090 was tested using the game Assassin's Creed Shadows at 8K resolution. The RTX 5090, launched in January, has generated significant interest, especially for its ability to handle high-quality gaming. At first, running Assassin's Creed Shadows at 8K was challenging. The game struggled to perform, showing frame rates as low as 0-1 fps. This was expected due to the game’s demanding graphics, which include advanced ray tracing effects. Reducing the graphics settings helped slightly but still yielded unsatisfactory performance. To improve the experience, the Multi Frame Generation (MFG) feature was enabled. This technology allows the GPU to create additional frames using AI. With MFG active, performance dramatically increased, averaging around 83 fps, well above the desired baseline of 60 fps. This allowed the player to increase graphic settings to enhance visual quality. Surprisingly, even with higher graphics settings, the frame rate remained stable at around 81-82 fps, which was unexpected. However, if ray tracing effects were adjusted to the highest setting, performance dropped to 39 fps, suggesting a delicate balance between visuals and gameplay fluidity is necessary. Overall, the Nvidia RTX 5090 can play Assassin's Creed Shadows effectively at 8K, given certain adjustments. However, there are concerns about optimization issues with the game, which might limit the potential of this powerful GPU. Developers are encouraged to improve game support to maximize the gaming experience.
