Asteroid Alinda to pass by Earth this weekend with no threat to safety

Asteroid (887) Alinda, measuring 2.6 miles wide, will be visible this weekend as it approaches Earth. It is currently 7.6 million miles away and poses no threat, with its next close pass not expected until 2087. Stargazers can view Alinda using binoculars or telescopes in the constellation Gemini. For those without equipment, the Virtual Telescope Project will livestream the event on January 12 at 12:30 p.m. EST. This flyby is a rare occurrence, happening once every decade for asteroids of this size. NASA confirms no known asteroids will threaten Earth for at least the next century.
