Asteroid set to become Earth's temporary mini moon before meteor shower peaks
An asteroid named 2024 PT5 is set to enter Earth's orbit tomorrow night, acting as a temporary "mini moon" for about two months. Unlike the moon, it will follow a horseshoe-shaped path and will not complete a full orbit. The asteroid is too dim to be seen with the naked eye or standard telescopes, requiring professional equipment for observation. It will leave Earth's orbit by November 25 and won't return until 2055. In addition to this event, the Draconid meteor shower will peak around October 8-9, offering a chance to see shooting stars. Comet C/2023 A3 is also expected to brighten between September 27 and October 2, potentially becoming very visible.
