Auckland's Huia water treatment plant costs double
The cost of replacing Auckland's Huia water treatment plant has surged from $420 million to $1.12 billion. This major increase has raised concerns among local residents. Watercare chief executive Dave Chalmers believes the new estimate is justified. He points to the extensive work needed to meet safety and capacity needs. The project involves building two new reservoirs and upgrading water mains. The Commerce Commission will keep a close eye on Watercare’s finances. They want to ensure greater transparency and accountability in such expensive projects. This cost increase comes shortly after Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown called for stricter oversight of capital projects. He has proposed ten steps to keep such projects affordable for the community. Chalmers insists that the investment will ultimately provide good value for Aucklanders.
