Aussie snorkeller urges safety after near-drowning incident
An Australian snorkeller named Robyn Larson-Shelton had a frightening experience while diving at Bass Point Reserve near Shellharbour. She got trapped underwater in discarded fishing line. Robyn is an experienced snorkeller who usually picks up garbage while enjoying the ocean. While trying to collect some fishing line, Robyn realized she had become tangled in it. She was turning around frequently to look for fish when another line caught in her fins. Despite her efforts to untangle herself, the line continued to wrap around her. At one point, Robyn was pulled about 100 meters out to sea by the currents. Although she felt anxious, she wasn't scared for her life. Eventually, she made her way back to shore, but her movement was restricted by the fishing lines. She credited her wetsuit for helping her stay afloat. Robyn now carries a knife during her snorkeling trips and encourages others to do the same. She wants people to be more aware of their impact on wildlife. Discarded fishing lines can pose serious dangers to marine animals, and Robyn reminds everyone that a simple piece of fishing line can be life-threatening in the water.
