Austin Simmons is emerging as Ole Miss' quarterback leader
Austin Simmons is stepping into the role of starting quarterback for Ole Miss as the team begins spring practice. The Rebels recently finished a successful season, winning 10 games for the third time in four years. With talented players like quarterback Jaxson Dart and other stars now gone, Simmons is ready to lead the team. Simmons, a redshirt sophomore from Florida, played behind Dart last season. He threw for 282 yards and two touchdowns in limited action. He made a notable appearance during a game against Georgia when he helped score a touchdown after Dart got injured. Dart, who holds several records for Ole Miss, was praised for his leadership. Head coach Lane Kiffin noted that Simmons does not need to copy Dart, but rather should develop his own style of leadership. Simmons has been spending extra time with teammates to build connections, although he admits he is not naturally outspoken. Simmons wants to lead by example rather than through words. He is working to become a more vocal leader while ensuring his teammates know he supports them no matter the circumstances in a game. Junior wide receiver Cayden Lee, a close friend of Simmons, believes Simmons has grown in confidence since arriving at Ole Miss. Lee described Simmons as a fun person off the field, highlighting his strong throwing ability. He noted that Simmons has become more aware of his talent, believing this realization is crucial for both Simmons and the team’s success moving forward.
