Austin startup Tern AI develops satellite-free navigation system
Austin-based startup Tern AI has developed a new navigation system that does not rely on satellites. This system uses artificial intelligence to analyze data from vehicle sensors and maps, allowing for accurate positioning without a satellite connection. Tern's Independently Derived Positioning System (IDPSTM) has been tested successfully in real-world conditions, outperforming GPS in challenging environments like downtown areas and tunnels. The technology is resistant to jamming and spoofing, addressing national security concerns. The company recently secured $4.4 million in seed funding and has gained attention from the U.S. Department of Transportation, which awarded Tern a contract. This system requires only a software update, avoiding the need for costly new infrastructure.
