Summary: Australia plans to invest billions over the next 20 years to expand a shipyard in Western Australia. This facility will serve as the maintenance hub for its nuclear-powered AUKUS submarine fleet.

An initial investment of A$127 million will upgrade the Henderson shipyard near Perth. The facility will also produce new landing craft and frigates for the Australian military.

The AUKUS pact, signed in 2021, allows Australia to acquire up to five nuclear-powered submarines from the U.S. by the early 2030s. The total cost of the deal is estimated at A$368 billion by 2055.
