Australia proposes new drinking water guidelines for PFAS chemicals
Australia's National Health and Medical Research Council has released draft guidelines proposing lower safe levels for four PFAS chemicals in drinking water. These guidelines will inform state policies but are not mandatory. Final guidelines are expected in April 2025. The new limits aim to address concerns about PFAS, known as "forever chemicals," which persist in the environment. However, most Australian drinking water supplies already have PFAS levels below the proposed limits, indicating minimal health impact. The review considered recent studies on PFAS effects, including potential links to thyroid function and cancer. The draft guidelines are now open for public consultation until November 22, 2024.
