Australia uses road fines to fund driver training program
Authorities in Australia are increasing road fines to address rising road deaths. The funds generated are now supporting the Driver Licensing Access Program (DLAP), which helps vulnerable groups obtain driver's licenses at no cost. The DLAP offers free driver training to Aboriginal communities, refugees, and others facing challenges in getting licensed. Participants report increased job opportunities and a sense of freedom from being able to drive. Last year was the deadliest on Australian roads since 2012, prompting a 10-year plan to reduce fatalities. The NSW Road Safety Fund, established in 2012, ensures that fines are used solely for road safety initiatives.
