Australian couple stranded in Scotland due to premature birth
An Australian couple has been stuck in Scotland for months after their baby was born prematurely. Dani Thomas and her partner Michael were traveling in Scotland when Dani unexpectedly went into labor. Their son, Anderson, was born at just 23 weeks on November 29 and weighed only 600 grams. He has been in intensive care at Edinburgh Children's Hospital since then. The couple cannot return home to Australia because they are waiting for their son's health to improve. They are staying in a hospital room provided for families. Dani's mother expressed concern, stating that without this support, the couple could be homeless. They have faced challenges with their travel insurance. The U.K.-based InsureandGo has stated that they will not cover accommodation costs because the couple can supposedly fly home. Michael argued that no reasonable person would leave their baby overseas. The insurance company has offered a one-time payment of $3,000 but insists that medical bills and accommodation costs are not included in their policy. InsureandGo explained that typical travel insurance policies do not cover newborns born overseas. They acknowledged the couple's difficulties and offered additional support. However, the couple is still trying to navigate issues with obtaining necessary travel documents for their baby, as he is on a ventilator. Dani and Michael are eager to return to Australia, stating they have responsibilities back home, including a mortgage and other bills to manage. They hope their son's health will improve so they can finally make the trip back.
