Australian horse My Wish contends for Hong Kong Derby

Australian breeders are hoping for a big win in the Hong Kong Derby with their horse, My Wish. The trio of Steve Hodge, Brad, and Fran Marshall took a risk on a less desirable broodmare. This mare, named Set The Tone, was bought for just A$3000 while she was pregnant. Set The Tone only had one win at a small racecourse. Hodge had trained her, and when her owner decided to reduce his horses, Hodge and his friends seized the opportunity. After Set The Tone lost her foal, they still managed to breed her with another stallion, leading to the birth of My Wish. Originally named Lika Ryder, My Wish quickly gained attention after his first trial race. He won by more than four lengths, and interest from buyers in Hong Kong surged. Though they planned to race him themselves, the offers were too tempting. My Wish, now trained by Mark Newnham, has been performing well. He has won four races, including the Classic Mile, and comes into the Derby as a strong competitor. Hodge is excited about the possibility of a major win on Sunday. Hodge will attend the Derby at Sha Tin and has fond memories from his previous visits to Hong Kong. He believes it’s significant for small-time breeders like them to have a horse in such a prestigious race. If My Wish wins, it could increase the value of his full-brother, who was recently weaned. The breeders have plans for Set The Tone to continue producing quality horses.
