Authorities consider expanding evacuation zones near Kanlaon Volcano due to increased activity
Authorities are considering expanding mandatory evacuation zones around Kanlaon Volcano due to increased volcanic activity and the potential for a tropical cyclone next week. Currently, a six-kilometer danger zone is in effect. Since an explosive eruption on Monday, the volcano has released 4,000 tonnes of sulfur dioxide daily and recorded 30 volcanic earthquakes. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has not yet raised the alert level but warns that hazardous eruptions are possible. Planning for a worst-case scenario includes extending evacuation zones up to 10 kilometers, potentially affecting 139,000 people. The Department of Social Welfare and Development is ready to assist evacuees, while tourism activities in nearby areas have been suspended.
