Auto Trader predicts major shift to electric vehicles in Britain by 2034
The number of petrol cars in Britain has reached 18.7 million this year but is expected to drop by over 40% in the next decade. Auto Trader forecasts this decline will begin in 2025, with petrol cars projected to fall to 11.1 million by 2034. Electric vehicle (EV) adoption is anticipated to rise significantly, from 1.25 million in 2024 to 13.7 million by 2034. However, the expected EV market share in 2025 will be 23%, still below the UK government's target of 28%. Concerns remain about the impact of the zero-emission vehicle mandate on jobs and the need for better charging infrastructure. Despite these challenges, demand for used cars, including EVs, is expected to grow slightly, with sales rising from 7.61 million this year to 7.7 million in 2025.
