Auto workers in Andhra Pradesh demand repeal of G.O. 21
Auto workers in Andhra Pradesh are calling for the withdrawal of a government order that's making penalties harsher for minor violations. This demand was voiced during a meeting of the Pragatiseela Auto Workers’ Union in Vijayawada on Sunday. U. Venkateswara Rao, the IFTU State secretary, spoke about the government's neglect of workers' rights. He said that the transport sector is treated mainly as a means for generating income, not for supporting workers' welfare. K. Polari, the IFTU State general secretary, echoed this sentiment, insisting that the government should withdraw G.O. No. 21 introduced by the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP). The G.O. significantly increases fines for minor infractions. For example, a penalty for carrying extra passengers has jumped from ₹300 to ₹10,000. Other penalties for issues like driving license renewals are also steep, starting from ₹5,000. Union leaders highlighted that some workers affected by recent floods have not received promised compensation of ₹20,000. They accused the TDP-led NDA government of failing to deliver on promises, including the creation of a welfare board and financial assistance for drivers. The meeting concluded with resolutions addressing these issues, as workers united in their call for better treatment and recognition of their rights.
