Avalanche risks increase in Western Himalayas due to warming

A new study shows that avalanche risks in the Western Himalayas have increased due to climate change and human activities. The region sees 30-40 avalanche-related deaths each year, with Lahaul & Spiti and Chamoli being the most affected areas. The research, conducted by scientists from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, assessed 11 districts in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. It found that rising temperatures and rapid infrastructure development contribute to the region's vulnerability. The study introduced a Combined Avalanche Vulnerability Index to measure risk factors, including weather conditions, topography, and human activity. A recent avalanche in Chamoli killed eight workers and trapped 54 others, highlighting the ongoing danger.
