Avocado consumption during pregnancy may reduce infant allergies

medicalxpress.com

A study by the Hass Avocado Board and the University of Eastern Finland found that pregnant women who consume avocados may reduce the risk of food allergies in their infants by 43.6%. This research involved 2,272 participants from the Kuopio Birth Cohort Study. Children of mothers who ate avocados showed a lower incidence of food allergies compared to those whose mothers did not consume avocados (2.4% vs. 4.2%). However, no significant links were found between avocado intake and other allergic conditions like rhinitis or eczema. The study suggests that nutrients in avocados may support immune development, but further research is needed to explore long-term effects. Concerns were raised about transparency regarding funding and potential conflicts of interest in the study.
