Avon Lake plans extensive sidewalk improvements for safety
Avon Lake is planning significant sidewalk improvements to enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The focus will be on the intersection of Lake Road and State Route 83 after recent accidents, which included a fatality. The city has engaged Mannik & Smith Group (MSG) for this project. They presented their plans to the city council, highlighting the need for better safety measures after several incidents involving cyclists. Councilman David Kos emphasized the urgency of making Lake Road safer, stating that efforts to improve conditions have been ongoing for decades. The sidewalk project will cover approximately five miles along Lake Road. MSG is working with the city to secure funding, which could cover up to 90% of the costs. This funding will come from various sources, including the Ohio Department of Transportation. Already, some minor improvements have been made, such as curb ramps and resurfacing. The project will be executed in phases, with the first phase focusing on areas without sidewalks. The estimated cost for the entire project is $25 million, with construction starting in late spring and expected to finish in the fall. Future phases will install additional safety features, including pedestrian hybrid beacons at critical intersections. These beacons will help alert drivers to pedestrians crossing, particularly near busy sites like the Aquatic Center. City leaders are also considering the best locations for these beacons to maximize safety. Overall, these planned improvements aim to create a safer environment for everyone using Lake Road.
