Baby Monkey Rescued from Wildfire in West Java, Reunited with Mother

jakartaglobe.id —

A one-week-old Javan surili monkey was rescued from a burning tree during a wildfire on Mount Ciremai in West Java, Indonesia, and successfully reunited with its mother the next morning. The rare infant was found weak with its umbilical cord still attached. Volunteer firefighter Darsa, 51, heard the baby's cries at around 11 p.m. on Oct. 22 at about 1,600 meters elevation. After providing emergency care, rescuers spotted a surili group 300 meters away and placed the infant for the mother to retrieve. The Javan surili is a protected species with only 4,000 to 6,000 individuals left in the wild, primarily in West Java's mountain forests. It served as the mascot for Indonesia's 2016 National Sports Week.
