Balochistan faces escalating violence and growing unrest

Balochistan is experiencing a rise in militant violence. This situation is largely due to decades of ineffective government policies. Officials have not made significant efforts to address the root causes of these problems. Recent attacks in Balochistan, as well as in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), have highlighted a serious security threat. While each province faces different issues, together they complicate the fight against terrorism. Many believe that harsh government actions and the denial of rights have contributed to increasing unrest. In Balochistan, a long-standing conflict is worsening. The once limited violence is now escalating into a full-scale insurgency. Separatist groups are gaining more influence, as the local population feels increasingly alienated from the government. Recent incidents show an increase in high-profile attacks against security forces. For example, gunmen recently attacked a police station in Khuzdar district and set up checkpoints, signaling a shift in tactics. The insurgents are becoming more organized and bold, launching larger attacks. In 2024, Pakistan saw the highest number of terrorist events in a decade, with many occurring in Balochistan. The violence from groups like the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) has taken a heavy toll, killing around 225 people last year. The unrest disproportionately affects regions like the coastal areas and those near Iran. Additionally, Chinese workers involved in development projects in Balochistan face new threats. Ordinary Pakistani citizens, particularly from Punjab, are also at risk. Many people have been attacked during public transport. The BLA has evolved over the years. Originally made up of tribal members, it now includes educated young people frustrated with political and economic inequality. Many Baloch people feel the central government discriminates against them and believe their rights cannot be achieved through legal means. The situation has worsened after the heavily criticized 2024 elections, where many felt the process was rigged. The government’s oppressive tactics have only deepened the distrust between the people and the state. Many young Baloch individuals, feeling hopeless, have turned to militancy. It is important for the state to fight against insurgency but also to address the political and economic grievances that fuel it. To truly resolve the issues plaguing Balochistan, there must be a focus on healing and understanding rather than just repression.
