Bashar al-Assad flees to Russia as rebels seize control of Damascus
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has fled to Russia after rebels seized control of Damascus, ending his 24-year rule. The rapid offensive, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and allied factions, began on November 27 and quickly toppled the government. The rebels captured key cities, including Aleppo and Hama, and cut off major highways. By December 8, they had taken control of Damascus, forcing Assad to abandon the capital. Reports indicate he resigned and left with his family. The offensive resulted in over 820 deaths, including civilians, since it began. The conflict, which started as a peaceful protest in 2011, has led to significant loss of life and displacement in Syria.
