Bay Area man faces 100 years for crime spree
A man from the Bay Area, Tele Matangi, has been convicted for a violent crime spree that took place in Monterey County. He faces a possible sentence of up to 100 years in prison. On September 18, 2023, Matangi’s day of crime began when he crashed into a locked high school parking lot gate. After abandoning his vehicle, he carjacked a driver at gunpoint and fled on Highway 156. About 40 minutes later, Matangi caused a crash while driving recklessly. After the accident, he shot at people who tried to help the victims. He then attempted to carjack another driver but failed. Matangi then entered a nearby home by breaking a window. He threatened the homeowner at gunpoint, stole their keys, and drove their car to Aromas. He later abandoned the stolen car and took a golf cart from another location. After hiding in a storage unit, Matangi was finally spotted by the owner. He was told to leave and started walking, where he was soon found by a sheriff's deputy. Matangi brandished a gun but was arrested shortly after. At the time of his arrest, he had a loaded firearm, ammunition, and methamphetamine on him. Because of his previous felony convictions, he was not allowed to have a gun. Matangi is scheduled for sentencing on March 28.
