Bay Village seniors receive technology assistance from students
Bay High School students are helping seniors in Bay Village by assisting them with technology issues. The "Tech Time" program connects students with local seniors to improve their quality of life. The program helps seniors learn how to use smartphones, set up video calls, and navigate social media. It began about eight years ago when Brent Neibecker, the Tech Club Advisor, saw a need for tech support at the Dwyer Senior Center. A few motivated students stepped up, and the program has grown since then. Jennifer Ruese, the Senior Activities Manager, highlights the rewards for both seniors and students. Seniors are eager to learn, and helping them makes technology more accessible. Besides tech support, the program builds connections between young and older people. Intergenerational programs like "Tech Time" help reduce social isolation among seniors. Research shows these activities can improve seniors' mental health and community satisfaction. Neibecker mentions that past participants encourage new students to join, highlighting the impact on both groups. Students gain valuable skills such as communication and patience while assisting seniors. This year’s volunteers include students from different grades, all ready to help. According to AARP, over 40% of older adults face challenges with technology. Residents are invited to join the program for tech assistance and to foster new friendships. Sessions last 45 minutes, and students visit during their school’s Quality Resource Period. For those interested, contact the Bay Village Senior Center at (440) 835-6565 for more information.
