Bengaluru exhibition highlights pastoral communities' challenges
A recent exhibition in Bengaluru focused on the lives and challenges of pastoral communities in the Deccan region. Called ‘Living Lightly – an Utsav Celebrating Pastoralism in the Deccan’, the event featured art installations, a film festival, concerts, and a crafts bazaar. It took place from January 31 to February 16 and aimed to raise awareness about the struggles faced by these communities. The exhibition highlighted various aspects of pastoral life. It shared stories about the connection between pastoralists and urban society, as well as their relationships with animals. From the impact of climate change to the value of traditional crafts, the event addressed many topics affecting pastoral communities today. One of the highlights was a six-minute film titled Desi Oon, created by Studio Eeksaurus. This stop-motion animation tells an important story about Deccani sheep and shepherds. It also questioned the reliance on wool imports while neglecting the valuable local wool. Another major attraction was a musical performance called Kurubar Haada, which brought traditional songs of the Kuruba community to life. The event also featured a play that illustrated the struggles of the Dhangar Gavli community in north Karnataka. That presentation showcased their challenges in protecting their land and highlighted their deep bonds with livestock. Additionally, sessions were held where women from pastoralist communities exchanged traditional knowledge and discussed women's roles in the dung economy. Overall, the exhibition aimed to foster a deeper understanding of pastoral communities and their contributions to the environment and culture. Organizers hope this increased engagement will support these communities, who live sustainably while facing many pressures.
