Bengaluru's 'Cauvery aarti' event faces environmental opposition

Bengaluru is facing controversy over plans to hold a 'Cauvery aarti' at Sankey Tank on Friday. The government says the event is inspired by the Ganga aarti in Varanasi and aims to promote water conservation. However, some environmental activists are opposing it, claiming it will damage the local ecosystem. The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is organizing the celebration and hopes to attract thousands of participants to foster community bonding around water. Two lawyers have filed a petition in the high court to stop the event, citing a law that prohibits any activity within 30 meters of the tank's boundary. Geetha Misra, one of the petitioners, expressed respect for the religious significance of the event but argued that it should be held at the origin of the Cauvery River. She is worried that turning the event into a large commercial gathering would harm the lake's sanctity. Misra emphasized that the ecosystem, home to migratory birds and aquatic life, must be protected. Mohan, another advocate involved in the case, pointed out that the law clearly forbids such events on lakes. He mentioned a previous case involving Mallathahalli Lake, where officials were held accountable for violations. He noted that the BWSSB has not obtained the necessary permissions for the event, making it illegal. The planned event includes traditional rituals by priests from Varanasi, a ceremonial procession, and a special puja. It will also feature a lighting display, a laser show, and an orchestra. Water from the Cauvery's source will be shared with attendees as prasada. The BWSSB expects more than 10,000 people to attend, including its employees and their families.
