Biden administration proposes ban on Chinese vehicles over security concerns
The U.S. Commerce Department has proposed banning key Chinese software and hardware in connected vehicles due to national security concerns. This move would effectively bar nearly all Chinese cars from the U.S. market and require American automakers to remove Chinese components. The proposal aims to prevent potential surveillance and control of vehicles by foreign adversaries. It follows recent tariff hikes on Chinese imports, including a 100% duty on electric vehicles. The software ban would start in the 2027 model year, while the hardware ban would take effect in 2029 or 2030. Public comments on the proposal are open for 30 days, with a final decision expected by January 20. The rules would apply to all on-road vehicles, excluding agricultural and mining vehicles.
